Not every young person has the opportunity or inspiration to unlock their potential and find their Starting Block in life. The Starting Blocks Challenge is your way to help Dame Kelly Holmes Trust change what’s possible for young people who are facing challenges in their everyday lives.
A Starting Block is the person, place or moment that inspired you to become who you are today. Get sponsored to run, walk, swim or ride the distance back to where your story started.
Tell us about your inspiration, share your challenge with your social networks, and get ready to fundraise for Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. Help us give more young people the chance to be the best version of themselves.
Raise £250 or more and receive an official Starting Blocks medal. For all our Starting Blocks participants under 18, hit a £50 target to get your medal. (Make sure that the adult who sets up your fundraising account lets us know that you’re taking part!)
Share your story and your experience on social media using the hashtag #gobacktogiveback and encourage others to take part in the challenge.
Starting Blocks Challenge Examples
Here’s what others are doing for their Starting Blocks Challenge:
Ben’s Starting Block
Ben was inspired by his college drama teacher, who encouraged him to think outside of the box and make a difference to the world around him. He’ll be cycling the distance back to his old college on a turbo trainer to say thanks.
Jenny’s Starting Block
In 1978, Jenny started her first day as a nurse in Manchester. Still proudly working for the NHS, Jenny will champion this moment by walking 1978 minutes across 10 days.
Rob’s Starting Block
The first person who saw potential in Rob was his English teacher at school. She inspired a love of reading but also challenged him to look at life differently and not always follow the crowd. Rob will run the 130 miles back to his old school.
Sarah's Starting Block
Sarah will be cycling from her home in Poole to her first sailing club in Sunbury on Thames to say thank you to the people and the club that set her on the path to becoming a double Olympic champion.
How your fundraising helps Dame Kelly Holmes Trust
This will provide each young person with a wellbeing pack full of useful equipment as well as access to our Mental Health and Wellbeing app.
This will enable 20 young people to attend a day of transformational mentoring from a world class athlete.
This enables 20 young people to create a positive social action project on issues that affect their community, leading to a positive benefit for up to 200 local people.
