Not every young person has the opportunity or inspiration to unlock their potential and find their Starting Block in life. Every young person deserves an equal opportunity to be the best version of themselves. We work with young people who need the support of a role model to unlock their potential. The Starting Blocks Challenge is your way to help Dame Kelly Holmes Trust change what’s possible for young people who are facing challenges in their everyday lives.

A Starting Block is the person, place or moment that inspired you to become who you are today. Get sponsored to run, walk, swim or ride the distance back to where your story started.

Tell us about your inspiration, share your challenge with your social networks, and get ready to fundraise for Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. Help us give more young people the chance to be the best version of themselves.

Raise £250 or more and receive an official Starting Blocks medal. For all our Starting Blocks participants under 18, hit a £50 target to get your medal. (Make sure that the adult who sets up your fundraising account lets us know that you’re taking part!)

Share your story and your experience on social media using the hashtag #gobacktogiveback and encourage others to take part in the challenge.

Starting Blocks Challenge Examples

Here’s what others are doing for their Starting Blocks Challenge:

Ben was inspired by his college drama teacher, who encouraged him to think outside of the box and make a difference to the world around him. He cycled 216 miles in three days back to his old college to say thanks.

Sarah’s Starting Block

Sarah will be cycling from her home in Poole to her first sailing club in Sunbury on Thames to say thank you to the people and the club that set her on the path to becoming a double Olympic champion.

Sam’s Starting Block

Sam walked the 75 miles from the Brooks Macdonald office in Bury St Edmonds where he works to the London office, completing the walk in five days.

Rob’s Starting Block

To celebrate his 50th birthday, Rob decided to cycle from John O'Groats to Lands End with his partner and brother, two of his Starting Blocks in life. They covered the 1020 miles in 14 days with no punctures along the way!

Company Starting Block

Staff at Brooks Macdonald teamed together to go back to the Starting Block of their company by collectively covering the distance of 1991km – 1991 the year the organisation was founded.
